A DOCUMENTARY FILM directed by Chiara Clemente

Synopsis

In a time when America’s treatment of immigrants remains fraught with contradictions, IZZY is a testament to the contributions and creativi- ty that have shaped the nation—proof that the real American Dream is not about assimilation, but about the freedom to create on one’s own terms.

IZZY is a celebration of artistic freedom, immigrant resilience, and an extraor- dinary creative partnership. The film follows Isabel and Ruben Toledo, who ar- rived in the United States as children on the 1960s Freedom Flights from Cuba. When they meet in high school, their love sparks a lifelong artistic collaboration that propels them into the heart of New York’s electrifying downtown scene of the 1980s.

From her debut at New York Fashion Week in 1984, Isabel Toledo emerges as a singular force in fashion—her independence, fierce yet elegant fusion of her Cuban heritage, and uncompromising vision earning the admiration of her peers. Yet, in an industry dominated by conformity and male gatekeepers, she and Ruben often find themselves overlooked. Refusing to bow to commercial pressures, they chart their own path, embracing creativity over convention— a bold act for two immigrants navigating the Reagan-era hostility toward newcomers. Over the years, the Toledos cultivate a devoted following of trailblaz- ing women, culminating in Isabel’s career-defining moment: Michelle Obama’s selection of her dress for the historic 2009 Presidential Inaugura- tion. It is the ultimate recognition—proof that she has been woven into history.

But after a decade of success, tragedy strikes. Isabel’s sudden passing from cancer leaves Ruben unmoored, feeling as though he has lost half of himself. Yet, his grief transforms into a mission—to ensure Isabel’s legacy endures. IZZY honors the deep sense of mutuality and interconnectedness embodied in Isabel and Ruben Toledo’s relationship—a mode of collective existence we must remind ourselves of. The Toledos’ enlightened love exemplifies a world where we set aside personal ego to achieve collective good. IZZY is a moving portrait of immigrants, love, art, and interdependence, reminding us that true success is not measured in material achievements but in the ability to live with dignity and purpose.
